How to Overcome TENSION In Your Violin Playing
Thank you, this was so inspiring, as are the comments! I just started at the age of 61. I'm also learning to play on a left-handed violin. To me there was no question that I needed to play left-handed. (I don't understand why there seems to be such a resistance to that in the violin world!) I'm enjoying the challenge of studying the violin - when you are learning something and WANT to practice, I think that's an indication you are on the right track! I was a professional singer so hopefully that will be of some benefit. I also studied ballet for 8 years so I'm used to walking before running and being disciplined (not that that discipline has transferred to other areas of my life!) So hopefully I'll be able to play a song without my neighbours taking a hit out on me before I'm a centenarian!
I can't wait to see how this affects my playing. I've been teaching myself with online help for a few weeks, playing daily, and I've used rosin before every time!
Beautiful!
This is cool
JJJJ
This particular song is also very beautiful with the simple single note approach. For me at least.
I just switched from a full fingerboard sticker to a couple of strips of washi tape-- 1st and 3rd finger.
I am Indian but christian. ❤I love this song
Gods this is wonderful to listen to!
Been playing for five years and i recently found some discomfort, thanks for the vid
I can't look at someone with a booger ring
Fyi, Ireland is not in the British Isles
sorry if this is kind of an obvious question, but is it ok to go to a session (for instance at a bar or public venue) just to observe? ive only just started violin so im so far away from actually being able to play with other people, but i love the music/inspiration
You know. This is the 3rd time I've come back to this. After a while I start fighting against my bow arm. This technique here actually resets me and gives me back my confidence in my right hand. After I feel like I'm holding the bow rather than just having it rested on my fingers. Thank you 🤘
I play guitar and this blues scale is one of the most ones I've used all the time.. what's a guitar is tuned in fourths and the fiddle is tuned and fifths.. so it's kind of like an open TuneIn on the guitar each string I've been working on it love the fiddle I got an old one I had to fix it I glued it all together fixed it nice it's holding tune for a while now keep on fiddling
This is what I needed just really show slow the chords.. much obliged
haha Like the salesy intro!
gonna sound like an old man- but why do young women think a bull nose ring looks good?
BRAVO !
It depends on rosin quality. Some are more sticky than others. Also climate plays a part. I don't like old rosin sticking around the violin too long. So it's a good habit to clean up all rosin powder on the violin after each practise/performance session. If the rosin does not adhere to the hair too long after extensive rosining, likely bow hair needs a re-hair. As a thumb of rule for myself, I like 'fresh' coat of rosin in every performance, but moderate amount.
This is very different to a British/Irish session which is much less formal, more of a free for all. I don't think I've ever called out a tune but occasionally if there's a pause I can start playing something and those that know it will play along, those that don't can listen and perhaps record. It's always good to spend time sitting back and listening and having a beer. I used to always bring a mandolin too so I could play somethig a bit low key rather than fiddle all the time.
I've heard that some American fiddlers use a very flat bridge that allows them to play triple stops?
My contribution to a session is to sit in the corner and listen 'cause I suck...
So what. Play anyway. Only way you'll get better. Try one note rhythmic solos.
brilliant simple and straight forward
Where do you recommend I get a starter fiddle/violin?
Gorgeous violin what's the brand
Good information to know. Very helpful! Thank you so much.
Thank you!🩷 You play very beautifully!✨
Cool Just signed up!!
We use it a lot in the middle eastern music
cant do it time to smash to bits and get a gutir
❤❤ Love it, country taste.
Baker-esque.
is it possible I am just unable to do double stops due to my thick fingers? I tried to move my elbow more forward with no success.
I've only been playing for 4 months and my fiddle teacher is starting me on this.
I find it to be quite the opposite. Flattening out the knuckles can lead to a significant downfall of efficiency over time. It mostly leads to having the root of the 1st finger colapse, and as repertoire becomes more demanding, each player will eventually have to work on producing a richer sound, and in a position like that, the intuitive thing will be to pronate into the collapsed 1st finger, them additionally press from the shoulder, creating debilitating tension in the entire right arm. This is not a rule - to each his own. However, a bowstick laid slightly bellow the level of the elbow, forearm and wrist, with all the knuckles connecting to the bow in a soft curve as demonstrated, is anatomically frendlier and gives you far more power to comfortably and healthy counteract the weight of the arm. The bow hold you demonstrated as non optimal is unmistakably similar to many of the holds of some of the most amazing violinists of all time, in fact almost identical to that of Hilary Hahn.
Your playing is so smooth and beautiful!
great lesson. thanks!!
Like. Subscribe. If you have to ask... Whatever.
I will add this to my key of C 'repertoire', currently standing at two, Morning Has Broken and Danny Boy. 😃
Thank you
Thank you so much for always posting you have helped me so much. I am 14 and teaching myself violin by videos and you have helped me a ton ❤ Jesus loves you and so do I!❤

Version 1: folk song Version 2: Southern victory
Wow, I wish I could play like you. I'm getting a decent sound now, but adding these layers of complexity with double stops is still a complete mystery to me.
Hey Lauren. Could you play the whole song with these solos inserted? It would help execially to hear how the third solo fits. Thank you. This wagon wheel series was so fun!
